Solo Bucket List Trip: Martin

4 February – 6 March 2023

Martin’s journey started 18 months before his arrival, and was one of our most complex trips to date - yet, entirely in our wheelhouse!

Coming from Wales UK, Martin had visited Tasmania numerous times almost 20 years prior working as a hotel manager aboard cruise ships. On one of these journies, he hired a car and made a mad dash up the East Coast of Tasmania for a quick overnighter. This 48hrs of rushed freedom from the ship left a lasting memory and he vowed to return and see Tasmania on his terms and at his pace.

His brief to us was simple: he liked riding bikes, bushwalking, good food, and a good glass of red — all things Tasmania (and we) could easily deliver.

Over emails and calls, we worked back and forth with Martin putting together a true bucket list itinerary that would see us first meeting him in Launceston for a pre-tour drink to chat through the month to come. Martin kicked things off at Cradle Mountain where we linked in with a walking guide for a series of day walks. After four days in Cradle Mountain, Martin then linked up with Rohan for his first mountain bike components on the West Coast of Tasmania, taking in both Silver City and Mt Owen, as well as food and wine at Moonscape.

From Queenstown, Martin continued under his own steam, meandering his way south to Mt Field National Park, where we arranged another walking guide for a schedule of day walks in the Park. This following with a few days spent in Hobart before finally meeting up with Rohan again for the final leg of the tour: Mountain Biking in Derby.

This week-long portion of the trip was dotted with various food and wine experiences between rides, with the most notable at Oyster Bay Farm in Coles Bay. After several days guided around the Derby network, and completing the full Bay of Fires Wilderness Trail (42km), it was time to get Martin back to Launceston for his flights back home to Wales.

A message from Martin:

Dear Rohan and Dianne,

Just wanted to put pen to paper to say thanks again for a wonderful trip. I felt my parting words to Rohan yesterday did not do justice to the exceptional time I have enjoyed in Tasmania. The various elements biking/hiking/accommodation/travel all messed together so smoothly and seamlessly that I became fully absorbed in my Tasmania adventure. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting a very personal account of life in Tasmania, learning many new facts and details that can only be gleaned through conversations and shared experience. Ryan, I must mention, is an ambassador for your business and guided me safely and competently to explore more places than I could have ever imagined as a solo traveler.

Whatever the future holds I wish you both the very best in your endeavours. I appreciate a lot of work behind the scenes has gone on in order to make my trip a memory to be treasured and an adventure to be told. Thank you.

With very best wishes,
Martin
