NZ Crew’s 10-Day Lap of Tassie

9–19 March 2023

The lads out of New Zealand contacted us a good 6 months before their trip, starting with the simple inquiry: “Can you take us to all Tasmania’s main riding locations and some good swimming holes?”.

After back-and-forth phone calls with the group leader, it was time for a Microsoft Teams chat with the crew. Per the crew’s request, the call was scheduled for a Friday afternoon and took place at their local pub. Over an online beer (or two) we hashed out the finer details of what was set to be ten epic days hitting Tasmania’s three key riding areas: Maydena, West Coast, and Derby. Plus, as many swimming holes in between as possible.

The crew’s first day included arriving at Hobart airport with transfers to Maydena for two and a half days of riding and cold plunge swimming in the Tyenna River. Finishing up at Maydena we headed North-West over the highlands and across to Queenstown to sample the Mt Owen and Silver City mountain bike trails. Local swimming holes were frequented, including a quick dip in the Indian Ocean at Ocean Beach. The secret Queenstown local swimming hole just out of town can make your bones cold, and when you’ve got kiwis telling you the water is cold, you know it’s freezing!

After a couple of days exploring the West Coast, we pushed east over Cradle Mountain stopping at The Bush Inn Brewhouse for lunch and a brewery tour with Rohan’s brother Mike. This was the perfect rest day for the lads with a 5-hour drive from West to East, making it into Derby in the early evening.

Several days were spent in Derby with private shuttle laps to take in as many trails within the Blue Derby Network as possible, along with the epic wilderness trails: Bay of Fires (42km), Blue Tier to Weldborough Pub, and Atlas. The town is built for mountain bikers, with a floating sauna and cold plunge, pubs and restaurants, and even some wildlife spotting!

Their last day in Tasmania started pre-sunset, departing for Hobart to get the lads on their flights back to NZ.
